Looping von Ursula Sax – Das gelbe Wunder
-

Looping from Ursula Sax – the Yellow Wonder
-
Bold and dynamic, a yellow swirl as tall as a house spirals into the Berlin sky before finally returning to solid ground. In the process it spans, with dance-like elegance, a distance of 50 meters. Light and full of verve, it appears to defy gravity. Looping from Ursula Sax is an elegant yellow exclamation mark of sculptural vision, dynamism and purpose! The yellow stands for immateriality, is light and energetic, friendly and yet autonomous, it has signal character, is luminous and conspicuous, simultaneously warm and cold, embodying distance and proximity. It establishes a friendly contrast to Berlin’s typical uniform grey, or alternatively, embraces and greets the continually changing blue of our metropolitan sky.
That the large-scale sculpture proved possible is a testimony to the uncompromising character of the artist, but also the courage of the Berlin Senate’s selection committee which was unsure whether this bold symbol could ever be built – and above all to the perseverance of the Senate Department for Building and Housing which undertook its realisation. The Sax vision became the structural engineers’ nightmare. Made by Sax is not just a seal of quality, it is also a testament of faith: Nothing is impossible! The one meter diameter tubes had to be bent to the calculated angle and assembled on site in a forest of scaffolding. An act of precision beyond compare. It is no wonder that her sculptor colleague Richard Serra also has his materials produced in Germany.
-
The structural engineers and tube builders sweated, the prophecies of doom accumulated – depending on the weather and the day’s task - however the artist withstood them all and was proven right!
22 years later Looping has established itself as the queen of the large-scale public sculptures in Berlin’s urban space. Every citizen of Berlin is familiar with it as the yellow exclamation mark, highlighting and connecting the urban space en route to the AVUS motorway in the direction of Potsdam, Magdeburg and Hanover. However the name of the work and its creator remains an inside tip. With modesty and great artistic self confidence Ursula Sax placed her faith in the power of the work alone – she did not invite the press to the opening ceremony in 1992 and a plaque naming its creator was only added last year. Her faith in the power of the work of art has been proven correct, however today’s world (of reception) is a different one. In our age, shaped by digital communication and social media, Looping needs to be re-communicated as that which it is: a young, fresh, vigorous, breathtaking and timeless major work of art from the avant-gardist Ursula Sax!
